Shortly after purchasing, water pump seized, $1500 in damage to timing belt, water pump, and 5 pulleys. Fixed it, but car didn't run too well afterwards so off it went.Īpril 02-Jan 08 - 1996 Subaru SVX - from 55k miles to 150k - lots of problems with this one. car ran pretty well for most of those years, had reoccuring brake problems, 1 tune up, and around 95K the head gasket blew. May 97 - April 02 - 1994 Pontic Grand Prix - started with somewhere around 30K miles, sold at 98K. No repairs needed while I had it, besides when I backed out of a driveway and got schmucked by a Pizza Hut delivery driver.totalled the car.last I heard they cut the car in half and sold the front half. Oct 96 - May 97 - 1993 Pontiac Grand Am - had around 33K miles on it when purchased. On my 13th year of driving now, recently purchased my 4th vehicle. It seems that I put the most miles on my cars when they're new and back off as they age. I plan on keeping this one for a while, as it only has 73,000 miles on it.ġ987-1993 I had a 1985 Nissan Sentra in which I put 60,000 miles on, or 10,000/year.ġ993-2003 I had a 1993 Acura Integra in which I put 130,000 miles on, or 13,000/year.Ģ003-present I have a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 which has 73,000 miles on it, or approximately 13,000 per year.

Another maintenance free vehicle except for a O2 sensor that went bad at around 55,000 miles. If I hadn't had an accident in 1999 that messed up the front end, I may actually still be driving it.įinal (and current car) is a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 which I bought new in 2003. (window switches, sunroof switch, speakers burned out, cassette player, glove compartment locked shut). For all I know, the engine still runs, but a lot of non-essentail interior items started to break.

All in all, it was basically maintenance free exept for 3 sets of tires, 3 mufflers and an entire exhaust system replacement near the end. It was probably a little more car than a 22 year old needed, but I kept this car for 10 years and 130,000 miles. It was a good college car, however it wasn't worth the money to fix, so I leased my next car:Ī 1993 Acura Integra. It had around 30,000 on it, and I drove it until 1993 when a timing belt broke at 98,000 miles and caused something like $700 (in 1993 money) in repairs. Here's my short vehicle history even though I've been driving for more than 20 years.įirst car was a 1985 Nissan Sentra which was more or less a hand-me-down gift from my old man when I turned 16 in 1987. Do you get new cars every 4 years? Do you buy used or new? Do you make your own repairs?

(all of them) I'm just surprised to hear how many miles people drive in a given year for their work, pleasure, railfanning, etc. Tell us about your vehicle, or vehicles that you own and have owned. This thread sort of goes along with the "gas prices" thread in the 'extreme' category, but I suppose it's train related and not really extreme.
